C.I.A. Closes Unit Focused on Capture of bin Laden
By MARK MAZZETTI New York TimesPublished: July 4, 2006WASHINGTON, July 3 — The Central Intelligence Agency has closed a unit that for a decade had the mission of hunting Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenants, intelligence officials confirmed Monday.
The unit, known as Alec Station, was disbanded late last year and its analysts reassigned within the C.I.A. Counterterrorist Center, the officials said.
The decision is a milestone for the agency, which formed the unit before Osama bin Laden became a household name and bolstered its ranks after the Sept. 11 attacks, when President Bush pledged to bring Mr. bin Laden to justice "dead or alive."
The realignment reflects a view that Al Qaeda is no longer as hierarchical as it once was, intelligence officials said, and a growing concern about Qaeda-inspired groups that have begun carrying out attacks independent of Mr. bin Laden and his top deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri.
Agency officials said that tracking Mr. bin Laden and his deputies remained a high priority, and that the decision to disband the unit was not a sign that the effort had slackened. Instead, the officials said, it reflects a belief that the agency can better deal with high-level threats by focusing on regional trends rather than on specific organizations or individuals.
"The efforts to find Osama bin Laden are as strong as ever," said Jennifer Millerwise Dyck, a C.I.A. spokeswoman. "This is an agile agency, and the decision was made to ensure greater reach and focus."
The decision to close the unit was first reported Monday by National Public Radio.
Michael Scheuer, a former senior C.I.A. official who was the first head of the unit, said the move reflected a view within the agency that Mr. bin Laden was no longer the threat he once was.
Mr. Scheuer said that view was mistaken.
"This will clearly denigrate our operations against Al Qaeda," he said. "These days at the agency, bin Laden and Al Qaeda appear to be treated merely as first among equals."
In recent years, the war in Iraq has stretched the resources of the intelligence agencies and the Pentagon, generating new priorities for American officials. For instance, much of the military's counterterrorism units, like the Army's Delta Force, had been redirected from the hunt for Mr. bin Laden to the search for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was killed last month in Iraq.
An intelligence official who was granted anonymity to discuss classified information said the closing of the bin Laden unit reflected a greater grasp of the organization. "Our understanding of Al Qaeda has greatly evolved from where it was in the late 1990's," the official said, but added, "There are still people who wake up every day with the job of trying to find bin Laden."
Established in 1996, when Mr. bin Laden's calls for global jihad were a source of increasing concern for officials in Washington, Alec Station operated in a similar fashion to that of other agency stations around the globe.
The two dozen staff members who worked at the station, which was named after Mr. Scheuer's son and was housed in leased offices near agency headquarters in northern Virginia, issued regular cables to the agency about Mr. bin Laden's growing abilities and his desire to strike American targets throughout the world.
In his book "Ghost Wars," which chronicles the agency's efforts to hunt Mr. bin Laden in the years before the Sept. 11 attacks, Steve Coll wrote that some inside the agency likened Alec Station to a cult that became obsessed with Al Qaeda.
"The bin Laden unit's analysts were so intense about their work that they made some of their C.I.A. colleagues uncomfortable," Mr. Coll wrote. Members of Alec Station "called themselves 'the Manson Family' because they had acquired a reputation for crazed alarmism about the rising Al Qaeda threat."
Intelligence officials said Alec Station was disbanded after Robert Grenier, who until February was in charge of the Counterterrorist Center, decided the agency needed to reorganize to better address constant changes in terrorist organizations.

Bin Laden Tapes:
Four days before the 2004 presidential election, bin Laden appeared with Bush's 'October surprise' - claiming he ordered 9/11 and appearing to goad Americans with threats of more attacks. The tape enabled Bush to recover vital approval ratings that he had lost to John Kerry in the weeks before and win re-election.
Even veteran newsman Walter Kronkite went public to suggest the tape was a set-up masterminded by Karl Rove.
Previous to the 2004 election, Bin Laden surfaced on a video on the eve of the two year anniversary of 911. Once again impeccable timing to deliver a video, given that he was reported to be hiding in the mountains of Pakistan. However, the video was quickly recognized by experts as simply a re-hash of old material cobbled together quickly and so amateurish that it could not have fooled anyone.
Previous to the beginning of the Iraq war, Bin Laden appeared in February 2003 on an audio tape that was touted as proof positive of Al Qaeda links with Saddam Hussein. In another amazing timing coincidence, the tape came barely a week after Colin powell's attempts to link Al Qaeda and Saddam in his botched presentation of lies and exaggerations before the UN Security Council.
In an even more bizarre twist, just hours before the tape was found and aired by AlJazeera, Colin Powell announced in the US Senate that a “Bin Laden tape is coming proving Iraq’s links with Al-Qaeda.” How does Colin Powell know what AlJazeera are going to broadcast before they do?
The tape voiced support for Iraq, but did not prove any link between al-Qaeda and the Iraqi leadership. It was described as dubious at best and at worst as an outright fake.
Previous to this tape a poor quality release in November 2002, deemed to be completely authentic by US Experts, was determined to be a total fake by the Dalle Molle Institute for Perceptual Artificial Intelligence in Switzerland. This time Bin Laden was said to be admitting to recent small scale terror attacks. Yet the voice on the tape was different to around twenty previous recordings of Bin Laden.
And of course, then there is the all time classic Bin Laden video, the number one hit from december 2001. The one we like to call the "Fat nosed" Bin Laden video.
This one was magically found in a house in Jalalabad after anti-Taliban forces moved in. It featured a fat Osama laughing and joking about how he'd carried out 9/11. The video was also mistranslated in order to manipulate viewer opinion and featured "Bin Laden" praising two of the hijackers, only he got their names wrong.
This Osama also uses the wrong hand to write with and wears gold rings, a practice totally in opposition to the Muslim faith. Despite the fact that the man in the video looks nothing like Bin Laden, the CIA stood by the video whilst many have declared it an outright fake.
The last Bin Laden Tape was back in January of this year, and was once again declared a fake. Professor Bruce Lawrence described the tape as "like a voice from the grave".
He thinks bin Laden is dead and has doubts about the tape. Lawrence recently analyzed more than 20 complete speeches and interviews of the al Qaida leader for his book. He says the new message is missing several key elements.

Following on from our three features on the latest dubious Al Qaeda video, We can reveal that further investigation into the origin of Al Qaeda video and tape release leads straight back to US military intelligence and Donald Rumsfeld.
The origin of the latest video, starring Mohammed Atta and flight 93 hijacker Ziad Jarrah, has been swept under the carpet by the mainstream media who bizarrely admit that the government has had the tape since late 2001 but still suggest it is a new release by Al Qaeda.
Interesting also is the fact that in an NBC article, they admit that before receiving the "exclusive US analysis" of the London Sunday Times' tape, they had filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the same tape of Atta earlier this year:
"The Sunday Times said it had obtained the video “through a previously tested channel” but gave no further details. NBC News filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the videotapes early this year, but the Pentagon has not yet turned them over. "
This is an open admission that it is the Pentagon that has released this tape and not Al Qaeda. this dovetails with our previous analysis that revealed that the footage has been seen before in a docudrama, the Road to Guantanamo, where it is shown to detainees at camp Delta as an intelligence surveillance tape.
Along with experts on Islamic terrorist groups who are baffled by the video and have declared that it has come from a security agency, the very journalist who received the tape also says the source was not Al Qaeda.
It is also interesting that this journalist, Yousri Fouda is not only a Sunday Times journalist but also the London Bureau Chief of Al Jazeera. He is the guy who normally breaks all the Al Qaeda tapes anyway, so really the London Times connection is just a smokescreen.
All evidence indicates that the tapes are provided to Fouda and Al Jazeera by As Sahab, the "production company" of Al Qaeda, via a group known as Intelcenter, who also SELL the videos online.
Intelcenter normally have the tapes available for sale as soon as they are released, indeed in the past they have even predicted when they are going to get a tape before it is released, as they did with the second London bomber tape on the anniversary of 7/7.
Intel center is run by Ben Venzke, who is an interesting character. A google search results in the revelation that he used to be the director of intelligence at a company called IDEFENSE, which is a verisign company. IDEFENSE is a web security company that monitors intelligence from the middle east conflicts and focuses on cyber threats among other things.
It is also heavily populated with long serving ex military intelligence officials.
The Director of Threat intelligence, Jim Melnick, served 16 years in the US army and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and worked in psychological operations. From the IDEFENSE website:
Prior to joining iDefense, Mr. Melnick served with distinction for more than 16 years in the U.S. Army and the Defense Intelligence Agency. During this period, Mr. Melnick served in a variety of roles, including psychological operations, international warning issues with emphasis on foreign affairs and information operations and Russian affairs. He also served in active political/military intelligence roles with an emphasis on foreign affairs. Mr. Melnick is currently a U.S. Army Reserve Colonel with Military Intelligence, assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Mr. Melnick has been published in numerous military and foreign affairs journals, and has received numerous military and DIA awards. Mr. Melnick has a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, a Master of Arts in Russian studies from Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Political Science from Westminster College.
So here we have a company that by it's own admission has a senior military psy-op intelligence officer who has worked directly for Donald Rumsfeld. As Intelcenter and Ben Venzke are directly connected to IDEFENSE, this puts Rumsfeld 3 small steps away from the Al Qaeda propaganda videos.
The NBC "US analysis" should be the focus of the latest tape and not the Times articles. It is an astounding piece of psyop propaganda that attempts in a shoddy way to fill in the "gaps" in 9/11 intelligence. The analyst, Evan Coleman, after admitting that the Pentagon has been "sitting on it" goes on to say:
"It is important for people to watch and realize that this video is conclusive proof that 9/11 was orchestrated by Al Qaeda at the most senior levels."
He then makes a direct assault on the 9/11 truth movement by saying:
"This is the kind of video proof that is going to put a lot of 9/11 conspiracy theorists out in the cold and for good reason."

Coleman contradicts himself throughout his own report by saying the Pentagon has had the video since 2001 whilst still towing the line that it was Al Qaeda that released the video.
The U.S. government's role in obtaining and carefully stage-managing the dissemination of these tapes, many of them old footage re-released over and over again, is now without a doubt manifestly obvious and demands immediate Congressional investigation. Please spread this information wide and help us expose the most duplicitous and manipulative administration in history, a regime that is engaging in psychological warfare against the American people.

London Times Journalist: Atta Tape Is "Not From Al Qaeda"JIM SCIUTTO / ABC | October 5 2006
U.S. intelligence officials are reviewing a new videotape that shows two of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers, and Osama bin Laden.
Ringleader Mohamed Atta is seen laughing with Ziad Jarrah, who piloted United Airlines Flight 93.
It also shows bin Laden speaking to a large group.
The Times of London, which first obtained the tape, says it was shot in Afghanistan in January 2000, 18 months before the terrorist attacks.
ABC Senior Foreign Correspondent Jim Sciutto spoke with the man who received the tape, Yousri Fouda.
He is the Al-Jazeera London bureau chief and a Sunday Times of London contributor.
Sciutto: What do we know about the al Qaeda public relations machine -- it seems to be getting more sophisticated, more active?
Fouda: Al Qaeda is the type of organization that loves, that thrives on the media, they tape almost everything they do, and then they will have their own strategy on when and where and through which manner they will release that tape, certainly that was my impression when I interviewed Al Mohammed in Karachi [in Pakistan] back in 2002. When I asked for certain tapes and certain videos by some of the 9/11 hijackers and they told me no, they have a certain strategy and they not going to release this now … and that they can release in a couple weeks plus the statements, plus the Internet and they have -- they're never short of a way to deliver a statement, or a tape or a CD and basically they are computer freaks.
(Fouda went on to explain how tech-savvy al Qaeda and its sympathizers have become. It is a skill that Fouda saw firsthand when he interviewed in person al Qaeda plotter Ramzi Binalshibh.)
When I arrived in that safe house in Karachi, Ramzi Binalshibh was sitting on the floor surrounded by at least four or five laptops and the same number of mobile phones and countless sim cards and he was using the texting. Binalshibh knows his way around the Internet. … They are professionals. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed himself, who is the main mastermind behind 9/11 as the head of the military committee behind al Qaeda, that was before. … He used to do the media work, so it falls very much into the heart of the al Qaeda -- it's very much part and parcel of the jihad as far as they are concerned.
Sciutto: You've had so many dealings with them about the al Qaeda machine, are they getting better at it?
Fouda: I think so, especially now since we're talking about the Internet -- because that you can do very little to avoid, to shut down.
Sciutto: How do they [Al-Jazeera] get hold of the tapes?
Fouda: I mean, it varies, sometimes a tape would be literally thrown at the door of our office in Kabul [in Afghanistan] or sent in the post, or through an intermediary -- now they can download it and by the way this is how I managed to get hold of one of the interviews with Ramzi Binalshibh -- he sent it via the Internet to somebody in London, who then put it in the mail to my office.
Sciutto: I was reading … some analysis because they are sympathetic tech-savvy people out there who will post the messages, blog them, download, and get them out that way as opposed to having a set. In a way it mirrors the operational side; it's not necessarily centrally controlled.
Fouda: Muhammad the Prophet said, "He who equips a conqueror, is a conqueror in his own right," and al Qaeda thrives on people round the world who sympathize with them to provide for crucial logistics, for example, somebody who would like to come back, it happened before, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed -- coming to Europe, somebody just to facilitate for him, to allow him to spend the night in his own house, thus you will never be able to check where he was and his movements … and that host will do it quite happily and think of it as something he was doing for Allah. It's a small thing -- the movement of tapes, the delivery of tapes from here to there, and I'm sure that this guy in London, and it's quite obvious that the tape, a CD, rather, was … from a specific area in London, but I'm quite sure that the tape arrived to him from [the] Internet.
Sciutto: Would al Qaeda release this type of unedited tape of the hijackers?
Fouda: I think it's quite clear, in my opinion, that this is not exactly the style that we are used to seeing from al Qaeda. Al Qaeda to start with would never release anything unedited. … When I interviewed Khalid Sheikh Mohammed [and] Ramzi Binalshibh, one of the conditions I would leave without [my video] tapes for them to doctor and then find a way for the tapes to reach me. So that's a sacred rule so to see Mohamed Atta and Ziad Jarrah socializing together and laughing and smiling, going over their scripts and the rest of it before delivering their scripts to camera, that's very strange, we've never seen this before from al Qaeda. Which gives me the impression that this is a different source, not al Qaeda.

According to a soon to be released book written by Bill Sammon, Senior White House Correspondent for the Washington Examiner, Bush attributes his 2004 victory over John Kerry in part to a Osama bin Laden videotape released on the eve of the election.“I thought it was going to help,” Bush decided. “I thought it would help remind people that if bin Laden doesn’t want Bush to be the president, something must be right with Bush.”
Former CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite went public to call the tape a set up orchestrated by Karl Rove.
Can there again be any doubt whatsoever that White House terror alerts and Al-Qaeda videotapes are 100% artificially manufactured and released at the most politically expedient times?
Last week, the Associated Press thrust a month old bin Laden tape back onto the front pages by reporting it as new. Like a band aid the propaganda has to be re-applied consistently to remind Americans who their enemy is supposed to be. The mob breaks a few windows downtown to make sure you pay your protection money.

We have George W. Bush admitting that bin Laden helped him win the election. We have confirmed analysis that proves past alleged bin Laden audiotapes and videotapes are forgeries. We have bin Laden's 9/11 confession tape being mysteriously discovered by US forces in someone's video cabinet in Jalalabad, a city with a population of 250,000. That gives us odds of at least 250,000 to one that US forces would happen to raid that house, find that videotape and find it interesting enough to pop in the VCR.
The tape shows an overweight individual with a fat nose posing as bin Laden.
Are we this stupid? Are the American people this dumb? The uncomfortable truth is that if you wrap a turd in pretty packaging the majority of Americans will gleefully accept the gift.
If you pitch an idea and frame it in the lowest common denominator football mentality, Bush good, bin Laden bad, bin Laden hate Bush, we support Bush, you're not going to have much of a problem convincing a generation that's been spoon fed black and white principles of good guys vs. bad guys on television and Hollywood for decades.
Our intentions can only be to continue to discredit the hoax terror alerts, staged Al-Qaeda arrests and mock bin Laden tapes. Or on the other hand should we be grateful that the puppet masters are limiting themselves to basic psychological operations and have yet to date to stage a false flag terror attack on the scale of 9/11?
Islamic websites carry al-Qaida's 'last warning'

WASHINGTON – Islamic websites yesterday posted a "last warning" warning by Rakan Ben Williams, who describes himself as an "al-Qaida undercover soldier" in the U.S., threatening two major operations designed to bring Americans "to your knees."
According to the Middle East Media Research Institute, the Global Islamic Media Front was responsible for posting the threat.
Williams is a mystery man, who, according to the London Arabic newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, is an English convert to Islam.
The threat suggests the attack will be far greater in magnitude than Sept. 11, 2001, because following this one, "there will be no one to analyze and investigate, because the mind and the heart will be unable to comprehend it. ... This will not be a single operation, but two; one bigger than the other, but we will begin with the big one and postpone the bigger one, in order to see [how] diligent the American people is [in preserving] its life. If it chooses life, [it must] carry out the demands of the Muslims, and if it chooses death, then we are its best perpetrators."
The warning appeared in Arabic and in English.
"Do not put your hopes on Bush and his clan, they are incapable of protecting you, and if they think they are, let them foil or stop the two upcoming operations, and punish those who are responsible for them," says the statement. "But if they could not identify and foil the devastating events coming your way, you must ask yourselves: How long will we continue allowing ourselves to be slaughtered with full advance knowledge of our fate?
"Let me now inform you why we opted to inform you about the two operations and your inability to stop them before they are carried out. The reason is simple: You cannot uncover or stop them except by letting them be carried out. Furthermore, the best you could do would be to accelerate the day of carrying out the operations. In other words, if we schedule the operation to take place tomorrow, the best you could do is to make it happen today."
The spokesman claims the operations are inevitable – even if the specific plans are uncovered by authorities.
"This indeed is a sweet situation to be in," he says. "It is a win-win all the way for us. It is the ultimate control and the most stunning way to stop an operation (accelerating it with the same impact). What we are saying is this: You will have a choice of either let us carry it out on our own schedule and with our own hands or allow your own intelligence apparatus to cause it to happen. This second choice will cause a level of dissatisfaction (with your decision makers) to reach its highest level. Therefore, your Homeland Security agencies would have no choice but to surrender and wait for the inevitable to happen."
Williams asserts, he "will not give any more clues; this is enough as a wake up call. Perhaps the American people will start thinking about the magnitude of the danger that is coming their way."
The statement also appears to be an attempt to divide Americans by region.
"O you helpless Americans, especially those living in States far away from Washington, D.C.!" he says. "Your country is comprised of many states that should not have anything to do with Muslims. Take the state of Arizona for example; what does this state have to do with killing Muslims in Palestine, Afghanistan and Iraq? What interest is it of theirs serving, helping, and siding with the Jews and Israel? If some members of your Congress and Senate are being used as Jewish tools manipulated by Israel, why do you bear the consequences? Why do you bring death and destruction to your homes and lives in an apparent sacrifice for a handful of dishonest men and women?"
The statement says the operations are awaiting only a final order from Osama bin Laden.
"The operations are ready to go, we are just waiting for orders from the commander in chief, Osama bin Laden (may Allah preserve him)," it says. "He will decide whether to strike or to hold. We swear by Allah that there are so many tricks and tactical maneuvers that will make your heads spin, by the grace of Allah. You will be brought to your knees, but not until you lose more loved ones and experience significant destruction."
It continues: "Now is the time to wake up and dust off this state of complacency and ineffectiveness to save yourselves and your loved ones from catastrophes sure to come your way. Remove war mongers from positions of power and throw them in prisons, where they belong. Rid yourselves of 'the Jewish pests' that brought nothing to you but adversity and loss of lives and wealth. They have deceived you for many years, it is time now you turn the table on them and make an example out of them. Rid yourselves of media crafters who deliberately kept you in the dark for so long and made a mockery of you before the rest of the world."
The statement calls for a boycott of NBC and CBS because of their Jewish owners. It calls on Americans to watch al-Jazeera and to visit Islamic websites "to get educated."
"Visit Mujahideen web sites to get to know who they are," it suggests. "You will see for yourselves that they are not what your media outlets made you believe they are. If you cannot do that, the least you could do is to watch Al-Jazeera Channel; there you might get 20 percent or less of the truth about the war zones. Resent the corrupted politicians in Washington, D.C. and demand justice, if they do not give in to your demands, you must declare autonomy so you may live in peace and security."
Williams calls the statement "the last warning you will receive from us. Consequently, if you ignore it, we regret to inform you that we will carry out devastating operations against the states of America and we will not show mercy whatsoever."

Why does Bush support Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia is technically a US ally, but US-Saudi relations have been under constant strain since the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Many Saudis would like to see their country end its cooperation with the US. A Saudi survey taken shortly after the September 11 attacks reported that 95 percent of educated Saudi men between the ages of 25 and 41 backed bin Laden's cause. Before September 11, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan were the only countries that recognized and aided Afghanistan's Taliban regime. In fact, Saudi Arabia still helps to fund some 15,000 religious schools in Pakistan. Students memorize the Koran and are indoctrinated with anti-American, anti-Israeli and anti-Indian propaganda. They are also encouraged to engage in jihad to defeat a "global conspiracy to destroy Islam". These schools supplied thousands of recruits for the Taliban militia in Afghanistan and are still being used to recruit militants to fight the US-led forces in the Middle East.

Osama Connected to 9/11? Not According to the F.B.I.

If you take a minute to visit the F.B.I. website and check out their Most Wanted list, you will run across a familiar face; Osama bin Laden. Of course we know that Osama is wanted by the F.B.I. but did you know he is NOT wanted in connection to the events of September 11th 2001?
As of today, 4/28/06, the F.B.I. website listing for Osama notes that it was last updated in November, 2001, after the events of September 11th 2001. While the site notes several crimes for which Osama is suspected, the site makes no mention of the events of September 11th.

I find it very interesting that the F.B.I. sees no direct connection between bin Laden and the events of September 11th. Don’t you? Maybe they know something that we don’t know about the events! Think about it!

Flashback: Washington Post Doesn't Answer Why No Bin Laden 9/11 Indictment
Long before the war in Iraq, the "War on Terror" began in Afghanistan and the hunt for Al Qaeda leader Usama Bin Laden. So, why then is there not a single reference to 9/11 on the FBI'S '10 Most Wanted' poster of Bin Laden?
First of all, it turns out, Bin Laden has never been indicted for the attacks of September 11th. The FBI poster reads: "Usama Bin Laden is wanted in connection with the August 7, 1998, bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya. These attacks killed over 200 people. In addition, Bin Laden is a suspect in other terrorist attacks throughout the world."

NEW YORK (AP) - An Algerian man believed to be the last domestic detainee still in custody from a national dragnet after Sept. 11 - and who was cleared of links to terrorism in November 2001 - was set free this week, his lawyer said Friday.
Benemar Benatta, 32, went to Ontario, Canada, where he is seeking political asylum, after being released from a Buffalo immigration lockup Thursday, attorney Catherine Amirfar said.
``After five years, he had become all but hopeless,'' she said. ``Now he's cautiously optimistic.''
Benatta was among 1,200 mostly Arab and Muslim men detained nationwide as potential suspects or witnesses in the investigation following the terrorist attacks. The government has refused to discuss their fate, but human rights groups have said they believed the former Algerian air force lieutenant was the only one still in custody.
Heather Tasker, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, refused to discuss Benatta's release, which was first reported by The Washington Post.
U.S. officials agreed to release Benatta after the Canadian Consulate General's office in Buffalo granted him temporary residency, according to court papers filed Wednesday in New York.
The last detainee's odyssey began Sept. 5, 2001, when, after overstaying a six-month visa, he crossed the border near Buffalo to seek asylum in Canada. After the Sept. 11 attacks, his background as a Muslim man with flight experience prompted Canadian officials to turn him over to U.S. authorities.
He spent the next six months in solitary confinement in a federal jail in Brooklyn. Though the FBI concluded he had no links to terrorism, he was eventually charged with carrying false identification - a case that was dropped after a federal magistrate found his right to due process had been violated.
The magistrate wrote in a 2003 decision that Benatta had been ``undeniably deprived of his liberty,'' and ``held in custody under harsh conditions which can be said to be oppressive.''
Despite the ruling, immigration officials kept him in custody in Buffalo while he appealed a deportation order and renewed his quest for asylum based on a claim that, as a military deserter, he would tortured or killed if he returned to Algeria.
A United Nations human rights group that studied the case noted that most asylum seekers are released pending the outcome of their cases.
``The imprisonment Mr. Benatta has endured has been a de facto prison sentence,'' the U.N. group wrote in findings made public in March. ``In no way can the simple administrative offence of having stayed in the United States after his visa had expired justify such a disproportionate
sentence.''
Ok, so now the government seems to be acknowledging (quietly) that Osama was a
convenient patsy, and didn't have anything to do with 911.... but what about Iraq?
Surely the government still wants us to believe they had something to do with 911, and
that's why they had to kill thousands of civilians and set them up with a police state, so
they could learn what democracy looks like.... right?

President Bush was in the midst of explaining how the attacks of 9/11 inspired his “freedom agenda” and the attacks on Iraq until a reporter, Ken Herman of Cox News, interrupted to ask what Iraq had to do with 9/11. “Nothing,” Bush defiantly answered. Watch it.
As ThinkProgress has repeatedly documented, Vice President Cheney cited “evidence” cooked up by Douglas Feith and others to claim it was “pretty well confirmed” that Iraq had contacts with 9/11 hijackers.
More generally, in the lead-up to the war in Iraq, the administration encouraged the false impression that Saddam had a role in 9/11. Bush never stated then, as he does now, that Iraq had “nothing” to do with 9/11. Only after the Iraq war began did Bush candidly acknowledge that Iraq was not operationally linked to 9/11.
