LONDON - The British tolerate millions of surveillance cameras watching their every public move.
They agreed to let roadside cameras record their vehicular movements and store the information
for two years. But when they discovered that their garbage is being bugged, they howled that Big
Brother had gone too far.

Nearly four million families have 'Big Brother' microchips fitted in their bins, it was revealed yesterday. A massive expansion of the 'spies in the bin' technology has taken place by stealth in preparation for a shake-up in rubbish collections.
A survey shows one in seven councils has introduced the chips - affecting 3.7million households.
It was previously thought only around 250,000 families were affected - meaning many homeowners probably have no idea their wheeliebin contains the chip.

LONDON (Reuters) - It could be the 4 million closed-circuit television cameras, or maybe the spy drones
hovering overhead, but one way or another Britons know they are being watched. All the time. Everywhere.
Airport-style x-ray cameras which see through clothes, could be installed on street lampposts
in a bid to combat terrorism, it was claimed last night.
The measure was suggested in a memo sent last week to one of Tony Blair's working groups
at the Cabinet Office, the Sun newspaper reported. The move comes amid growing concern
about Britain's "surveillance society".

Talking Big Brother Cameras going Nationwide
BBC - Tuesday April 3, 2007
Britains first talking CCTV cameras are publicly berating bad behaviour and shaming
offenders into acting more responsibly.
Recent trials saw cameras in Middlesborough have been fitted with speakers and
allow control room operators who spot any anti-social acts - from dropping litter to
late night brawls - to send out a verbal warning.
The success of the trial in Middlesborough means the scheme will today be rolled out
in designated areas across the country.
Read My Lips: Britain is a Police State
Wired - Friday April 27, 2007
This "British Police State" theme we have going here at the Gadget Lab is starting
to get genuinely scary. Now the Home Office in England are developing lip reading
cameras. It's software based so theoretically could be applied to every one of the
millions of cameras in Britain. From Sci Fi Tech:
Once it finds someone speaking certain key words or sentences, the system would
automatically send an alert message to a central console, mobile phone, or other
communications device. Police or security agents could then be dispatched to the
scene to question the individual.
England has received a £391,814 grant to develop the system, which is based on
existing speech recognition technology. Start counting, Brits. You have three years
to get out.
