Astronomers have captured the first footage of a solar "tsunami" hurtling through the Sun's atmosphere at over a million kilometres per hour.
Co-author David Long, from Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Ireland, commented: "The energy released in these explosions is phenomenal; about two billion times the annual world energy consumption in just a fraction of a second.
"In half an hour, we saw the tsunami cover almost the full disc of the Sun, nearly a million kilometres away from the epicentre."

When the sun sneezes it's Earth that gets sick.
It's time for the sun to move into a busier period for sunspots, and while forecasters expect a relatively mild outbreak by historical standards, one major solar storm can cause havoc with satellites and electrical systems here.
The story begins, in a sense, in classrooms around the world, where students are taught that the rate of decay of a specific radioactive material is a constant. This concept is relied upon, for example, when anthropologists use carbon-14 to date ancient artefacts and when doctors determine the proper dose of radioactivity to treat a cancer patient.

But that assumption was challenged in an unexpected way by a group of researchers from Purdue University who at the time were more interested in random numbers than nuclear decay.

NASA makes big announcement of fifty year hunt for ah... ah... "supernova" - huh? The translation for that would be 'looking for an explosion that hasn't happened yet'.
Above is actual photo released by NASA claiming to be of a "super-nova" they oddly claim they were looking for for fifty years... Some have suggested the hyped NASA press conference was about to reveal the approach of a dwarf star or planet that is heading towards us, but were told by "higher ups" not to disclose this information to the public at this time - thus the inexplicable super-nova story was substituted in the heat of the moment.

Should a "dwarf star" or similar planetary body brush past (or "light on" as the Greek word in the book of Revelation actually says) our Earth orbit, radiation from such a star or similar looking object could heavily contaminate various layers of our upper atmosphere, and this radiation would then leech onto our earth via precipitation, which would then contaminate many lakes and rivers. If this "great star burning like a lamp" is a large comet, it would consist of mostly water, as most comets contain large amounts of water and ice.
Coincidentally, the Russian translation of the word Wormwood is Chernobyl, which is now associated with a massive radioactive steam explosion that occurred at a nuclear power plant. Brown dwarfs are able to produce large amounts of contamination through radioactive beryllium and other elements produced in the core, however such objects are vary large and it is doubtful this scripture is referring to such a large object.

Gamma ray bursts are the most powerful explosions known in the universe. They can loose as much energy as our sun during its entire 10 billion year lifetime in anywhere from milliseconds to a minute or more.
The spooky thing about this pinwheel is that it appears to be a nearly perfect spiral to us, according to new images taken with the Keck Telescope in Hawaii. "It could only appear like that if we are looking nearly exactly down on the axis of the binary system," Tuthill said.
The findings are detailed in the March 1 issue of Astrophysical Journal.
Unfortunately for us, gamma ray bursts seem to be shot right along the axis of systems. In essence, if this pinwheel ever releases a gamma ray burst, our planet might be in the firing line.
"This is the first object that we know of that might release a gamma ray burst at us," said astrophysicist Adrian Melott at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, who did not participate in this study. "And it's close enough to do some damage."

The Sun spewed forth a massive amount of radiation this week, causing brilliant auroras and a radio blackout.
Since 14 January alone, it has unleashed at least 17 medium and five large solar flares from a single sunspot cluster. Forecasters at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expect medium to high solar activity to continue until 23 January.
"Having so many big flares from one particular region of the Sun is quite something," says Bernhard Fleck, project scientist for the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory satellite.
The X-rays produced by the flares did not rise to the level of the notorious solar storms of October and November 2003, but in terms of high-energy protons, this is the largest radiation storm since October 1989.
Evasive action
Two major US airlines rerouted planes away from the polar areas to avoid additional radiation, said Bill Murtagh, a space weather forecaster for NOAA. Instruments on two of NOAA's satellites, SOHO and the Advanced Composition Explorer, were blinded by radiation contamination for several hours, and there are unconfirmed reports of problems on other satellites.
The eruptions also required evasive action aboard the International Space Station. The two-man crew, Leroy Chiao and Salizhan Sharipov, ducked for cover inside the bulkier Russian side of the station when their orbit took them through the worst of the storm. High doses of radiation can cause health problems: astronauts are more prone to cataracts later in life, for example.
The astronauts plan to conduct a 5.5-hour spacewalk outside the station's protective walls on 26 January. They will install a new work platform, a small robotic experiment and other science equipment.
NOAA officials say that the sunspot region that caused the solar storms should rotate to the far side of the Sun by 22 January, so the astronauts should not be in danger of increased radiation exposure during their excursion.

New wonders about the Sun... it has iron surface.
The sun's photosphere is often mistakenly referred to as the surface of the sun. In reality however, the sun's photosphere is only a "liquid-like" plasma layer made of neon that covers the actual surface of the sun. That visible layer we see with our eyes is more commonly known as penumbral filaments. This visible neon plasma layer, as well as a thicker, deeper plasma layer of silicon, entirely covers the actual rocky, calcium ferrite surface layer of the sun. The visible photosphere covers the transitional region that is the actual surface of the sun, much as the earth's oceans cover most of the surface of the earth. In this case the sun's photosphere is very bright and we cannot see the darker surface features below without the aid of satellite technology.
The running difference imaging technique used by both NASA and Lockheed Martin have revealed to us for the first time that the sun is not simply a ball of hydrogen gas; it has a hard and rigid ferrite surface below the visible photosphere that can be seen in all of the images on this page! Each of the images was produced by NASA or Lockheed Martin so you can verify these images for yourself.
Just as Birkeland surmised, it turns out that the sun has a highly defined surface that rotates (uniformly) every 27.3 days. Dr. Birkeland was at least 100 years ahead of his time.

In an article posted June 10 to the Astrophysical Journal Letters website, astrophysicists at Stanford report spotting a black hole so massive that it's more than 10 billion times the mass of our sun. More important, this heavyweight is so far away that the scientists think it formed when the universe first began to light up with stars and galaxies, so it may provide a window into our cosmological origins.
"In cosmology, it turns out that 'a galaxy a long time ago' and 'far, far away' really do go together," says Associate Professor Roger Romani, who with graduate student David Sowards-Emmerd and Professor Peter Michelson of Stanford, and radio astronomer Lincoln Greenhill of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, spotted one of the oldest supermassive black holes yet found. The scientists collaborate at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford. "In this case, we're looking at [a black hole] far enough away that it's within a billion years of the origin of it all, the Big Bang."
"It's amazing to find something so interesting and unique in a relatively small survey," says Sowards-Emmerd, who re-analyzed EGRET data to select the targets examined by HET and analyzed the optical data.
Scientists are currently stymied about how a black hole could have gotten so big so fast. How do you take something big enough to hold 1,000 solar systems and as heavy as all of the stars in our Milky Way galaxy put together, and quickly crunch-collapse it?
Scientists think the universe formed 13.7 billion years ago with the Big Bang. The distance of the blazar indicates it formed a billion years after that.

A massive exploding faraway star — the brightest supernova astronomers have ever seen — has scientists wondering whether a similar celestial fireworks show may light up the sky much closer to Earth sometime soon.
The discovery, announced Monday by NASA, drew oohs and aahs for months from the handful of astronomers who peered through telescopes to see the fuzzy remnants of the spectacular explosion after it was first spotted last fall.
Using a variety of Earth and space telescopes, astronomers found a giant exploding star that they figure has shined about five times brighter than any of the hundreds of supernovae ever seen before, said discovery team leader Nathan Smith of the University of California at Berkeley. The discovery was first made last September by a graduate student in Texas.
"This one is way above anything else," Smith told The Associated Press. "It's really astonishing."

Earth's magnetic field is fading. Today it is about 10 percent weaker than it was when German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss started keeping tabs on it in 1845, scientists say.
If the trend continues, the field may collapse altogether and then reverse. Compasses would point south instead of north.
Not surprisingly, Hollywood has already seized on this new twist in the natural-disaster genre. Last year Tinseltown released The Core, a film in which the collapse of Earth's magnetic field leads to massive electrical storms, blasts of solar radiation, and birds incapable of navigation.
Entertainment value aside, the portrayal wasn't accurate, according to scientists who say the phenomenon of Earth's fading magnetic field is no cause to worry.
"The field has reversed many times in the past, and life didn't stop," said Gary Glatzmaier, an earth scientist and magnetic field expert at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Glatzmaier is keeping an eye on our planet's weakening magnetic field as he tries to learn more about how Earth's geodynamo works. The geodynamo is the mechanism that creates our planet's magnetic field, maintains it, and causes it to reverse.
Magnetic Shield
Earth's geodynamo creates a magnetic field that shields most of the habited parts of our planet from charged particles that come mostly from the sun. The field deflects the speeding particles toward Earth's Poles.
Without our planet's magnetic field, Earth would be subjected to more cosmic radiation. The increase could knock out power grids, scramble the communications systems on spacecraft, temporarily widen atmospheric ozone holes, and generate more aurora activity.
A number of Earth's creatures, including some birds, turtles, and bees, rely on Earth's magnetic field to navigate. The field is in constant flux, scientists say. But even without it, life on Earth will continue, researchers say.
"There are small fluctuations, which lead to nothing, and large ones, which we know from the geologic record are associated with reversals," said Peter Olson, a geophysicist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

An asteroid big enough to devastate 2000 square kilometers but small enough to escape detection missed the Earth by just 120,000 kilometers on 14 June, 2002.
The approach of asteroid 2002 MN was the closest recorded by astronomers since asteroid 1994 XM1 came slightly closer eight years ago.

Huge Asteroid to Fly Past Earth July 3/06
An asteroid possibly as large as a half-mile or more in diameter is rapidly approaching the Earth. There is no need for concern, for no collision is in the offing, but the space rock will make an exceptionally close approach to our planet early on Monday, July 3, passing just beyond the Moon's average distance from Earth.
Astronomers will attempt to get a more accurate assessment of the asteroid's size by “pinging” it with radar.
And skywatchers with good telescopes and some experience just might be able to get a glimpse of this cosmic rock as it streaks rapidly past our planet in the wee hours Monday. The closest approach occurs late Sunday for U.S. West Coast skywatchers.
The asteroid, designated 2004 XP14, was discovered on Dec. 10, 2004 by the Lincoln Laboratory Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR), a continuing camera survey to keep watch for asteroids that may pass uncomfortably close to Earth.
Although initially there were concerns that this asteroid might possibly impact Earth later this century and thus merit special monitoring, further analysis of its orbit has since ruled out any such collision, at least in the foreseeable future.
Size not known
Asteroid 2004 XP14 is a member of a class of asteroids known as Apollo, which have Earth-crossing orbits. The name comes from 1862 Apollo, the first asteroid of this group to be discovered. There are now 1,989 known Apollos.
The size of 2004 XP 14 is not precisely known. But based on its brightness, the diameter is believed to be somewhere in the range of 1,345 to 3,018-feet (410 to 920 meters). That's between a quarter mile and just over a half-mile wide.
Due to the proximity of its orbit to Earth [Map] and its estimated size, this object has been classified as a “Potentially Hazardous Asteroid” (PNA) by the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There are currently 783 PNAs.
The latest calculations show that 2004 XP14 will pass closest to Earth at 04:25 UT on July 3 (12:25 a.m. EDT or 9:25 p.m. PDT on July 2). The asteroid's distance from Earth at that moment will be 268,624-miles (432,308 km), or just 1.1 times the Moon's average distance from Earth.
Spotting 2004 XP14 will be a challenge, best accomplished by seasoned observers with moderate-sized telescopes.
On April 13, 2029, observers in Asia and North Africa will have a chance to see another asteroid, but without needing a telescope. Asteroid 99942 Apophis, about 1,000 feet (300 meters) wide, is expected to be visible to the naked eye as it passes within 20,000 miles (32,000 km). Astronomers say an asteroid that large comes that close about once every 1,500 years.
Observing plans
As 2004 XP14 makes its closest approach to Earth, astronomers will attempt to gauge its size and shape by analysis of very high frequency radio waves reflected from its surface.
Such radar measurements of the exact distance and velocity of the asteroid will allow for precise information on its orbit. From this scientists can also discern details of the asteroid's mass, as well as a measurement of its density, which is a very important indicator of its overall composition and internal structure.
Astronomers plan to utilize NASA's 70-meter (230-foot) diameter Goldstone radar, the largest and most sensitive antenna in its Deep Space Network. Located in California's Mojave Desert, the Goldstone antenna has been used to bounce radio signals off other Near-Earth asteroids many times before, and it is now being readied to “ping” 2004 XP14 on July 3, 4 and 5.
Augmenting the Goldstone observations will be radar observations scheduled at Evpatoria in the Ukraine, commencing several hours prior to the July 3 observations at Goldstone.

Mysteries and "wonders" on the moon?
You recall Apollo, the first manned flight to the moon about 30 years ago or so? Do you recall or remember that? When the Lunar Module landed on the moon it had these huge tall legs. Four huge legs that were attached to the lunar module. These legs were twenty five feet in length with big round cushioning Pads. Then the astronauts stepped down, and said "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". Did you ever think why is it that they had to climb down that far to make that statement?
Did you know in their calculations that the scientists were absolutely convinced, believing the moon was 4.6 billion years old and knowing from already previous satellite studies, on the accumulation of meteorite dust, (realizing the rate of meteor dust that is accumulating in the atmosphere of the Earth) that there would be at least 2000 feet of accumulated lunar meteorite dust all over the surface. So these legs with these big cushion pads were built, so that it might settle into the dust a few feet and not sink all the way down. That it would compact the dust as it settled. They were hoping that it would not sink indefinitely into this sea of dust, this accumulated dust.
If you didn't dust your house for 4.6 billion years, what would your house look like 4.6 billion years later? Actually, it would be buried under a mountain of dust wouldn't it? The scientists were very very surprised indeed by what they discovered. They discovered that the lunar module set down without going down a bit. In fact, the greatest depth of lunar dust that was measured thus far on the moon was only two inches. Now that presented a huge problem.
If there is only two inches of lunar dust - and they said the moon is 4.6 billion years old, something is not right here. So a number of scientists are now saying, including Dr Stewart Ross Taylor, that the moon can be no more than 10,000 years old maximum! Dr. Stewart Ross Taylor, a brilliant astronomer, and not a Bible believer, wrote a book called: " Lunar Science - A Post Apollo View"
These are not Christians trying to talk science into something. They are scientists that are dealing honestly with the cold data. They are now saying, (that is, a group of lunar scientists and astronomers) that the moon is not possibly 4.6 billion years old. That it has to be only 10,000 years old, or less.
The Ukert crater, located near the center of the moon as it is viewed from the Earth, contains this amazing equilateral triangle. According to Luna: Arcologies on the Moon, each side of the triangle is 16 miles in length. And note the three bright objects around the perimeter of the crater - if they are joined by straight lines, they too would form an equilateral triangle. Is this evidence of intelligent design, or merely a fantastic coincidence? Makes one wonder, doesn't it?
On March 7, 1971, lunar instruments placed by the astronauts recorded a vapor cloud of water passing across the surface of the moon. The cloud lasted 14 hours and covered an area of about 100 square miles.
Hundreds of "moonquakes" are recorded each year that cannot be attributed to meteor strikes. In November, 1958, Soviet astronomer Nikolay A. Kozyrev of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory photographed a gaseous eruption of the moon near the crater Alphonsus. He also detected a reddish glow that lasted for about an hour. In 1963, astronomers at the Lowell Observatory also saw reddish glows on the crests of ridges in the Aristarchus region.
The moon's crust is much harder than presumed. Remember the extreme difficulty the astronauts encountered when they tried to drill into the Maria? Surprise! The Maria is composed primarily illeminite, a mineral containing large amounts of titanium, the same metal used to fabricate the hulls of deep-diving submarines and the skin of the SR-71 "Blackbird". Uranium 236 and neptunium 237 (elements not found in nature on Earth) were discovered in lunar rocks, as were rustproof iron particles.

Heavier Elements on Surface: Normal planetary composition results in heavier elements in the core and lighter materials at the surface; not so with the moon. According to Wilson, "The abundance of refractory elements like titanium in the surface areas is so pronounced that several geologists proposed the refractory compounds were brought to the moon’s surface in great quantity in some unknown way. They don’t know how, but that it was done cannot be questioned."
Hollow Moon: The moon’s mean density is 3.34 gm/cm3 (3.34 times an equal volume of water) whereas the Earth’s is 5.5. What does this mean? In 1962, NASA scientist Dr. Gordon MacDonald stated, "If the astronomical data are reduced, it is found that the data require that the interior of the moon is more like a hollow than a homogeneous sphere." Nobel chemist Dr. Harold Urey suggested the moon’s reduced density is because of large areas inside the moon where there is "simply a cavity." MIT’s Dr. Sean C. Solomon wrote, "the Lunar Orbiter experiments vastly improved our knowledge of the moon’s gravitational field . . . indicating the frightening possibility that the moon might be hollow." In Carl Sagan’s treatise, Intelligent Life in the Universe, the famous astronomer stated, "A natural satellite cannot be a hollow object."
Moon Echoes: On November 20, 1969, the Apollo 12 crew jettisoned the lunar module ascent stage causing it to crash onto the moon. The LM’s impact (about 40 miles from the Apollo 12 landing site) created an artificial moonquake with startling characteristics—the moon reverberated like a bell for more than an hour. This phenomenon was repeated with Apollo 13 (intentionally commanding the third stage to impact the moon), with even more startling results. Seismic instruments recorded that the reverberations lasted for three hours and twenty minutes and traveled to a depth of twenty-five miles, leading to the conclusion that the moon has an unusually light—or even no—core.
Moon Diameter: How does one explain the "coincidence" that the moon is just the right distance, coupled with just the right diameter, to completely cover the sun during an eclipse? Again, Isaac Asimov responds, "There is no astronomical reason why the moon and the sun should fit so well. It is the sheerest of coincidences, and only the Earth among all the planets is blessed in this fashion."

Crop Circle Mystery continues through 2008. ('Signs and wonders' in the Earth? - of course!)
When Doug&Dave were confronted to provide evidence on certain claimed formations, they changed their story, and either reversed previous claims, or remained silent when asked to explain the list of features found in the genuine phenomenon. For example, when they claimed making "all the formations around the English county of Hampshire", it was pointed out that half the known formations had actually occured in another county. "We didn't do those either," they replied. As their story progressed, not even Doug and Dave knew which ones they had made, and although they claimed to have made hoaxes since 1978, the published date of the first confirmed crop circles actually date back to the 1930s. Few members of the public have heard these retractions.
The facts are, no man-made crop circle has satisfactorily replicated all the features recorded and associated with the real phenomenon, and scientists and researchers are still baffled in finding a viable explanation that explains all the features. Crop circles are created by an energy force seemingly at odds with modern science. Central to disputing the hoax argument is the fact that a physical object is required to flatten the crop to the ground, resulting in the breaking of the plant stems. In unexplained 'genuine formations' the stems are not broken but bent, usually no more than an inch or two from the ground, at the plant's first node. In many cases the crop is not merely laid over, but reveals an intricate multilayered weaving of the plants within themselves, that mere "stomping" could not accomplish.
Published in Physiologia Plantarum (1994), the international journal of the European Societies of Plant Physiology, Levengood's data showed that "plants from crop circles display anatomical alterations which cannot be explained by assuming the formations are hoaxes." He defined a "genuine" formation as one" produced by external energy forces independent of human influence."

From a distance, the area that forms the design appears to have been flattened by a steamroller. But closer examination reveals an intricate method used to create the depressions. Millions of plants are delicately interwoven as though a mat was being made. At the same time, many levels of these swirling and living mats are layered in alternating clockwise and counter-clockwise patterns. They are not broken, but gently bent into shape with no damage to the plants, which will continue to grow and produce, as though nothing unusual has taken place. That is the outward appearance, what's inside the plant has also been changed. Whatever process is employed, it actually alters the fundamental biophysics and biochemistry of the plants. Some have described the effect as resembling an exposure to intense, microwave radiation. The entire surface of some formations is glazed with a layer of minute particles of pure iron, while areas just outside the effected areas are not. The purity of these particles is not found in iron produced anywhere on Earth.

An increase of one unit of magnitude, for example, from a 4.0 to a 5.0 quake, is a 10-fold increase in wave amplitude on a seismogram, or about a 30-fold increase in energy released. Thus, the difference between a 4.0 and a 6.0 magnitude quake would be a release of energy 900 times (30 times 30) as great as a 4.0 magnitude quake since the magnitude is a logarithmic value.
Earthquake recording by Europeans began no later than the 16th century. Debate exists as to whether earthquake activity has notably increased, however many regions do report increased activity, as others record relatively constant rates. For example, the earthquake record reveals that since 1900 more than 100 moderate to large earthquakes occurred in Bangladesh, out of which more than 65 events occurred after 1960.
History shows that the number of "killer quakes" remained fairly constant until the 1950s -- averaging between two to four per decade. According to the US Geological Survey (see below chart), in the 1930 there were two (2) earthquakes of 6.0 or greater. In the 1940s there were three (3). In the 1950s, 9. In the 1960s, 13. In the 1970s, 51. In the 1980s, there were 86, and from 1990 through 1996, there have been more than 150.

Does it seem like the world is speeding up? That the pace of life is increasing?
If you feel that way, there's scientific evidence to prove your point. The world has sped up over the last few years. Timekeepers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) note that they have not had to insert an extra second (called a leap second) into their time scale for five years. Why? Because the rate of the Earth's rotation has sped up since 1999.
From 1972 (when the world went to the current system of atomic timekeeping) until 1999, 22 seconds were added to the world's time in order to keep atomic time synchronized with Earth's time, as measured by the Earth's spin. Since then, none, nada. Scientists are not sure why this is so, but they do offer some thoughts.
Tom O'Brian, a physicist and chief of NIST's Time and Frequency Division in Boulder, Colo., suggests changes in motion of the Earth's core, the effect of ocean tides and weather, and changes in the shape of the Earth may all be affecting the spin of Mother Earth. In general, he notes, the long-term trend has been for the Earth's rotation to slow down, but not in the last five years.
O'Brian said most scientists expect the Earth to continue slowing down again in the future. So maybe there is hope for those feeling particularly harried.
"The Earth's rotation rate has been the primary clock for nearly all of human history," he says, adding that "only in the last 50 years have we had clocks accurate enough to measure changes in the Earth's spin." NIST introduced the world's first atomic clock in 1949.

"Unheard of" Quakes leave seismologists 'shaken'

Mumbai: Unusual events "unheard of in the history of seismology" have been recorded in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, with more than 120 such events being recorded in the last one month, according to seismologists.
The seismology department of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and the Earth Sciences Department of the Indian Institute of Technology here have recorded over 120 such unusual events in the islands following the December 26 earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale that triggered tsunamis which wreaked havoc in several parts of the country.
Of these events recorded at BARC's Gouribidnur station in Karnataka, at least over 33 events were above 5 on the Richter scale, they said, adding "this is unusual and alarming as large amount of energy is being released so frequently."
Eleven events with surface wave of magnitude 5, indicating large amount of energy close to Nicobar Islands was also recorded, the seismologists said.
"Since yesterday, 16 events which range from 5.2 to 5.8 on the Richter scale have been recorded," they said.
"Whether these events are foreshocks or aftershocks - it is not clear, and has to be taken up seriously and the data analysed as fast as possible," the scientists said.
"Both `strike slip and `dip slip are taking place simultaneously and these factors have to be taken very seriously both by scientists and authorities," they added.
