Freedom being chipped away: poll
Less confidence in government, court, and media. (Source: National Post, Saturday, November 23, 2002) Nearly two-thirds of Canadians believe they have less freedom from government than they did a decade ago. The poll, conducted by COMPAS Inc., surveyed 608 Canadians and found they felt they are subject to more government interference in their lives now than 10 years ago. A solid majority (63%) said they are less free from government interference in their lives than they were 10 years ago. Just 15% said they are more free and and 16% said "in between." The poll was conducted between Nov. 16 and Nov. 19 and is considered accurate to within four percentage points, 19 times out of 20. Respondents said they had little confidence in traditional protectors of freedom, such as the media or the courts. Ranked on a 100-point scale, neither religion, the courts, the media, nor any level of government scored higher than 57 as a trustworthy protector of personal freedom. Denis Coderre, Canada's Immigration Minister, has said he is exploring the idea of a new national identity card for citizens. He said that a new, high-tech ID card with such biometric identifiers as a fingerprint or optical scan would alleviate U.S. concerns. He is asking MPs to study the issue. SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE POLL: 63% in practice feel less free from government interference in their life than they did a decade ago. 91% of respondents deem the preservation of freedom of speech important. Respondents rated it the most important freedom. 80% of respondents consider freedom of body important, but not as precious as other freedoms on the list, including economic freedom, freedom of association, freedom of religion and freedom of speech. 57% put trust in the courts, though they have never had to rely on them. 53% put trust in local government. 51% put trust in the federal and provincial governments. 50% put trust in the media. Roughly the same as organized religion. 57% of respondents think it is "a good idea" for ALL residents of Canada to be forced to carry a high-tech identity card.
